Butterfield Garage announces April artist

Posted

Butterfield Garage’s featured artist for April, Richlin Burnett-Ryan, presents “Exuberance,” a series of vibrant multi-media works full of color and life. A First Friday artist talk at 6 p.m. April 5 will be an opportunity to learn about her approach and inspiration.

Burnett-Ryan’s work explores the color play of tissue paper with acrylic paints and inks on canvas, which allows her to create translucent color interactions and texture. Her process begins by removing all color and shade from her photographic reference, reducing the image to its linear or solid black-and-white form. Then, she reintroduces color to vacant spaces, sometimes overlapping the form.

Born in 1967 in Georgetown, Guyana, Burnett-Ryan immigrated to the United States at 8 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Clara Barton High School and took art classes at the Brooklyn Museum. Her undergraduate studies were at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, and The School of Visual Arts, New York City. She majored in graphic design. She worked as the art director of IDD Magazine for Thompson Financial, New York City.

Burnett-Ryan is married to artist Weldon Ryan and resides in Palm Coast. Presently she is a full-time artist and curator.

Butterfield Garage Gallery is located at 137 King St., St. Augustine.
